Thanksgiving Flying — One-Page Checklist (Print-Friendly)

Best vs. Worst Days

🟥 Avoid: Wednesday before, Sunday after (heaviest crowds, flight caps amplify rolling delays)
🟩 Best: Thanksgiving morning (Thu), Black Friday (Fri)
🟨 Okay: Tuesday before, Saturday after

Pro tip: On 🟥 days, take the earliest departure (6–8 AM) to beat delay cascades.

Arrive At The Airport

  • Normal week: 2h (domestic)

  • Thanksgiving week: ≥ 3h

  • Major hubs (ATL/ORD/LAX/JFK): 3.5–4h

  • Known disruption (shutdown/ATC staffing/weather): 3–4h minimum

Security Options (Quick Compare)

TSA PreCheck — shoes on, laptop usually stays in; best value (≈ $78–$85 / 5 years)
CLEAR Plus — biometric ID to skip the ID line; pairs well with PreCheck (≈ $209 / year)
Regular — longest lines; budget option

Tip: Benefits, pricing, and availability vary by airport—check your home airport before you go.

TSA Packing Rules (3-1-1)

Must check/ship: liquids/gels >3.4 oz (sauces, gravies, jams, syrups), wine/spirits, wrapped gifts (use gift bags instead)
OK carry-on: pies, breads, cookies; empty bottle (fill post-TSA); travel-size toiletries (≤3.4 oz each); medications

Remember: 3.4 oz containers • 1 quart bag • 1 bag per person

Security Speed-Run

✅ Slip-on shoes
✅ No metal belt
✅ Laptop & liquids prepped (if no PreCheck)
✅ Empty all pockets before scanner
✅ ID + boarding pass ready
✅ Be courteous (it helps)

Timing Windows (since we’re <2 weeks out)

72–24 hours before:

  • Re-select seats (front/aisle helps on tight connects)

  • Screenshot 2–3 backup flights (numbers + times)

  • If you’ll need wheels: reserve a flexible rental

Check-in (T-24:00):

  • Check in on the dot; save + screenshot passes

  • Watch aircraft inbound status and route weather

Day of:

  • Arrive early (see timing above)

  • Keep essentials in personal item (not overhead)

  • Re-check gate—changes happen

Essential Apps

  • Airline app — alerts, rebooking, seats

  • Flight tracker — tail/inbound status

  • Gas/drive app — reality check for drive vs fly

Personal-Item Musts

✅ Phone, chargers, battery pack, headphones
✅ Medications (never check)
✅ Snacks, empty bottle
✅ One change of clothes, pen

If Delayed or Canceled

  • Move first: search alternates in the app immediately

  • Call while you queue at the gate

  • Script: “Hi! Can you see space on Flight [#] at [time]? I’m fine with a connection or partner airline.”

  • Rights: Airline-canceled flight → you can request a refund. Weather = no compensation; mechanical/airline fault → ask about meals/hotel

If You’ll Miss (or Missed) Your Connection

  • Run + call at the same time

  • Ask: “Please protect me on the next two flights to [destination]. Any partners?”

If Your Bag Is Lost

  • File claim before leaving the airport

  • Show bag photos; get a reference #

  • Most bags show within 24h

  • Prevention: pack 1 change of clothes in your personal item

Drive vs. Fly (Quiet Math)

Total flight time = home→airport + buffer + flight + deplane + airport→destination
Rule: If (total × 1.5) ≥ drive time, consider driving (especially on 🟥 days or if you’ll need a car anyway).

Thanksgiving Day Flights — Reality Check

Pros: shorter lines, calmer, often cheaper
Cons: fewer schedule options; some shops closed
Verdict: If it fits your plans, it’s the least stressful choice this week

Final Reminders

🔴 Avoid Wed/Sun when possible
🟢 Prefer Thu AM / Fri; Tue AM / Sat are workable
⏰ Show up early (really)
🎒 Carry-on if possible
🪪 PreCheck/CLEAR help—especially at major hubs
🙂 Be kind to staff (and yourself)
