What we asked Trailie
“Plan a 4-day Olympic National Park road trip with mountains, rainforest, and coast, but keep the driving realistic.”

Overview

Four full sightseeing days beginning in Port Angeles and ending at Lake Quinault. Stay in Port Angeles after Day 1 and Forks after Days 2 and 3.

Travel to the peninsula before Day 1 and onward travel after Day 4 are not included. This north-to-south sequence limits backtracking and protects separate mountain, lake, rainforest and coast experiences. Budget roughly 2–3 hours of road travel most days as a planning allowance, not a confirmed route time.

Things to Know

Before choosing travel dates

This undated route does not confirm roads or facilities will be open. Check Olympic's road and access information, including Hurricane Ridge and Hoh access, entry requirements and any shuttle arrangements. Mountain snow can change Day 1 substantially; if the ridge is inaccessible, substitute lower-elevation forest exploration near Port Angeles, accepting that alpine views cannot be guaranteed. Summer into early fall generally makes this combination simplest. A Seattle return on Day 4 requires shortening the outings and adding substantial travel time.

  • Road travel times are shown for planning. Shuttle/private-vehicle access depends on your travel dates; check access rules before setting out.
  • Seasonal access, reservations and conditions change; confirm them for your dates.

Recorded October 15, 2026. Conditions and availability may have changed.

I’ve planned a north-to-south route that keeps mountains, rainforest and coast on separate, unrushed days:

  • Day 1: Hurricane Ridge mountain scenery.
  • Day 2: Lake Crescent, then move west to Forks.
  • Day 3: A dedicated Hoh Rain Forest day.
  • Day 4: Ruby Beach and a finish near Lake Quinault.

Stay in Port Angeles after Day 1 and Forks for the next two nights. Changing bases once mid-trip avoids repeatedly crossing the peninsula. Budget roughly 2–3 hours on the road most days, as a planning allowance rather than confirmed driving times; entrance queues and stops are extra.

I assumed four full sightseeing days, starting in Port Angeles and ending near Quinault, with travel to and from the peninsula outside those days. Returning to Seattle on Day 4 would mean cutting back the coastal day.

Your month matters most for Hurricane Ridge access. Summer into early fall generally makes this combination simplest; check road access and any entry or shuttle requirements for your dates. If traveling imminently, NPS reports overnight US 101 closures at Hoh River Bridge October 13–19, 2026, which could affect this route.

What month are you going, and does Day 4 need to end in Seattle?
