What we asked Trailie
“Plan a realistic 7-day Washington national parks trip covering Olympic, Mount Rainier, and North Cascades without turning it into a driving marathon.”

Overview

A seven-day Seattle loop prioritizing time outside the car: two nights each in Forks, Ashford and Marblemount, with dedicated transfers on Days 3 and 5. Assumes a car, arrival in Seattle before Day 1, and summer mountain access, ideally late July through September; these are planning assumptions, not confirmed traveler details.

Day 7 returns to Seattle. Hurricane Ridge, Sunrise and the eastern Cascades are intentionally omitted to limit detours. This is a selective introduction to all three parks, not comprehensive coverage.

Things to Know

Before choosing dates

This summer-style itinerary depends on mountain roads and trails being suitable for your dates. Confirm road access, any required shuttle arrangements, entry reservations and trail conditions with Olympic, Mount Rainier and North Cascades. No date-specific access or reservation requirement has been confirmed here. If high-elevation conditions prevent Paradise walking, use suitable lower-elevation outings instead; outside the summer access season the overall route may need redesigning. Check coastal weather and tides before beach walking. This North Cascades visit focuses on the accessible park complex rather than a strenuous hike into the national park interior.

  • Road travel times are shown for planning. Shuttle/private-vehicle access depends on your travel dates; check access rules before setting out.
  • Seasonal access, reservations and conditions change; confirm them for your dates.

I built a seven-day Seattle loop with two dedicated travel days, rather than squeezing sightseeing into every long drive.

  • Day 1: Olympic’s Lake Crescent, then settle into Forks.
  • Day 2: Rain forest and Pacific coast, with a second night in Forks.
  • Day 3: Move to the Mount Rainier area; keep the rest of the day easy.
  • Day 4: A full Paradise day for mountain scenery and walking.
  • Day 5: Move north to Marblemount, without another mountain detour.
  • Day 6: North Cascades lake-and-mountain scenery, with unhurried exploration.
  • Day 7: Return to Seattle with a generous buffer.

The compromise: seven days covering all three parks still involves substantial driving. This version protects four sightseeing days and avoids repeated long commutes by staying two nights each in Forks, Ashford and Marblemount. I left out Hurricane Ridge, Sunrise and an east-side Cascades extension—not because they aren’t worthwhile, but because they would undermine your main goal.

I assumed Seattle start/end, a car, and seven usable days, ideally late July through September. Arrive before Day 1; avoid an early flight on Day 7. Dates, hiking ability and current access still need confirming; the saved plan includes the relevant checks. If you want demanding hikes rather than shorter walks, that’s the main refinement I’d make.
